New York ladies of the Baptist persuasion go in for the most ejabourate costumes for the garment immersion, the robes being made perfectly waterproof. It is questioned whether this , process is efficaceous. One lady of the school says : — This is splendid for feminine vanity, but the question arises in my mind does it benefit the condition of the soul quite as'mucb. as a veritable oldfashioned immersion, when instead, of being dressed in a waterproof garment and carefully dipped in a tank of warm water in the church, we had to ride miles to the river bank through mud and often rain to reach the appointed spot in midwinter, clad in flannel or alpaca garments, and after the service we shivering men and women were tenderly wrapped in shawls and cloaks and rode home in wet garments ?
