Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1880.

Considerable surprise was expressed in the Council at the impudent interference with the orders of that body by some person; or persons in wilfully removing the barriers; placed across the Collingwood street bridge; for the prevention of cart traffic. The' bridge has for some time been pronounced, dangerous, and, in order to guard against any! action for damages that might arise out ofi an accident owing to its unsafe condition, the! Council, having been advised by their soli-! citora that in such case they would certainly; be liable, took steps to prevent any such; waste of the Corporation funds by stopping the traffic. Their annoyance at finding that' their precautions had, without their know-, ledge, been rendered void for several hours - may be easily imagined, and instructions, were at once issued to the Town Clerk toi endeavor to ascertain who were the offenders, and upon recovery to prosecute them. ; Tbe offence is one of so grave a nature, and tbe example thus set of openly defying thai Council's authority so evil a one, that in the event of other means failing, a substantial : reward should be offered for the conviction of the offenders. We have been shown a pamphlet issued ! by the Australian Mutual Provident Society,; demonstrating tbe saving to insurers of a policy in that Society as compared with the New Zealand Government Insurance. Copies' of tbis pamphlet can be obtained od application to Mr A. A. Scaife, the Society's agent. '■ We have been requested to draw attention to an advertisement which appears in an-; other column to the effect that tbe Rev W. A. Wbjte will deliver a lecture "on the value of prophetic study," on behalf of the Young Men's Christian Association in the Temperance Hall on Tuesday evening next J We understand this lecture will be the last ■ of the Beries. The Customs receipts for the week ending this day amounted to £729 11b Bd. Those interested in the Nelson Rowing Club are remiuded that a meeting will be held in the Masonic Hotel at eight o'clock this evening. Attention is drawn to the series of special evangelistic services which are to be held at Foxhill and Wakefield during next week. All particulars will be found in an advertisement elsewhere. A sitting of the District Court will be held on Mo'ndiy next. There are several cases set down for hearing. '..' It will be seen, by .our telegrams to-day that the chief officer of the Bteamer Rangitira has had his certificate suspended for Bix months. According to the telegram the Press Agency has failed to send us any word concerning the commencement of the enquiry. The officers' and creW of the illfated steamer . passed through Nelson on their way to Wellington in the Wanaka on: Thursday. v . ; . are in the habit of doing? The latest in that way wm a. lengthy, telegram received last evening giving us the result of the Municipal Council election at Napier. Why the press agent there should have troubled ub with such a telegram— as if the people of Nelson cared two straws who were elected aa Councillors for the City of Napier—is a mystery. It has often been the case that when anything unusual has occurred which has reached us by a round about way, the agency have carefully neglected to acquaint us with it ; bufc juafc now because the inhabitants of Hawke's Bay are a little excited over a City Council election, the news niußt be flashed across to us in the shape of a long telegram. .
