INTERPROVINCIAL.
Wellington, Tuesday. Eleven entries have as yet been received for the 24 hours' pedestrian match to be held hero on the 10th and 11th proximo. The principal are Btooks and Delaney, Dunedin ; Swan, Christchurch ; Webber, Wellington ; Nearey, Wanganui ; and O'Connor, Timaru.
Dunedin, Tuesday. Captain Knapp of tbe barque Italy, lately arrived from Port Espe ranee, in Tasmania, was charged at the Police Court this morning with smuggling opossum rugs. He was fined £100 which was mitigated to £35.
A meeting of railway employees was held at the Lawrence station on Sunday evening to take into consideration tho present action of the Government in reducing the wages ten per cent., and the following resolution was unanimously passed : : thi&t this meeting thinks it is unfair for the Government to reduce teu per ceufc. off the salaries and wages, and this meeting unanimously pledges itself to abide by the decision arrived at by the Dunedin and Christchurch meetings. Calpho's tannery at Kaikorai was burned down on Sunday. It was insured in the Transatlantic for £208.
At the railwi-y employees meeting last night the deputation reported that Mr Couyera bad replied that the ten per cent reduction did not apply to the. wages men. The reduction is not yet in force. An all round ten per cent reduction is not intended, but a revision of the scale of wages ou an equitable practical system, of which due notice is to be given, will be brought into operation. The meeting agreed to abandon the agitation.
New Plymouth, Tuesday. At the R.M. Court this morning, the /sase of Revell v. Shaw excited some interest. The defendant is in Wellington discharging the duties of R.M. and District Judge, having exchanged with Mr Mansford, who came for a few months from Wellington for his health. Judge Shaw applied to the Court to obtaiu au ex parte hearing of the case in Wellington, but the solicitor for the plaintiff objected, as the adjournment was solely for the purpose of delay. The Resident Magistrate said it was a delicate position to be placed iv, but he decided that an ex parte statement could be made in Wellington on the 10th September, aud adjourned tho case until the evidence had been sent up.
