Wellington, Saturday, An eight roomed house near Johnstonville was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night. The building was occupied by two single men named Stratford. The origin is unknown. It is insured in the London and Lancashire for £200. The inquiry into the charge against the officials ol the Wellington Hospital continued yesterday afternoon and several more witnesses were, examined, all but one being favorable to the management. The medical Btaff have not yet been examined. It is expected that the inquiry will finish in three . more sittings. Oamaru, Saturday. A farmer named George Stragban was killed yesterday at Windsor. His team of horses bolted and threw the deceased from the dray and the wheel passed over bis head. JDeath was instantaneous.
Christchurch, Friday. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, William White Fraser, Joseph Carnabatn, and Samuel Johnston, proprietors of the Echo, were charged with committing a libel on James Izett, editor of the Star. The alleged libel was contained in an answer to a correspondent in the Echo, which was said to contain serious reflections on the prosecutor's private character. The accused were committed to take their trial at tbe Supreme Court. They were liberated on their own recognizances of .£IOO each. The erection of a Working Men's Temperance Hotel has commenced, and a public appeal is being made for subscriptions. Mrs Henderson, the widow of tbe notorious Matthew Henderson is left totally unprovided for. The Rev Mr Lingard is taking a leading part in raising subscriptions for her assistance. ' Dunedin, Saturday. It is said that Captain M'Kenzie will come forward for Waikaia, and that pressure is being brought to bear on Mr Bastings to stand. Judge Bathgate will retire at tho end of the month. The preliminary investigation into the Ryeburn murder is not yet over. A fir.§ occurred at noon to-day at Port Chalmers iv a house occupied by Captain Pilot Louden. The fire brigade were quickly in attendance, but so rapid.was the spread of the flames that, despite all they could do, tbe place was soon a heap of-, burning asbea. Two cottages adjoining occupied by Messrs Connell undLeiah were also damaged by tbe flames. Mr Conuell loses to a considerable extent. Captain Loudens house was owned by Mr Mitchell and was insured in the Norwich Union for £400 but the Captain's . goods were totally uninsured. The cottages were owned by Mr 11. Nicholla and were insured in the Norwich Union for £150. Mr Connell haa a policy over his furniture in the Union ofiice for £75. Hokitika, Saturday. The following telegram waa received from Ross thia evening: — The Wallace grounded on the North Spit at Okarito in trying to enter yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Probably sbe will get off on discharging if the weather is favorable. Gisborne, Saturday. News haa been received to-day of the death of John Greening, aged 74 years, at Mabia near Walker's station. The deceased was an old whaler and had reßided for the last forty years at Mabia, near Portland Island, during wbich time he had at his own expense kept a light burning at night as a signal for coasting vessels. By this means and by bis kindling signal fires on the beach many vessels were saved from being loßt during severe gales along the coast. All possible attcntiou was bestowed upon the deceased during bia last illness.
