A new application of* tite garotte (says the Melbourne Age) has been adopted by some of the criminals of this city, if we may- rely upon the statements, of a correspondent, who has furnished us with the following particti-! lars, for 'the accuracy of which he vouches. He states that on the evening; of Friday last a gentleman was goxn g: tiJ3 Latrobe-street> on his way home, about eight o'clock. He was •walking, carelessly along with both hands in his pockets, when suddenly, as he was pass-; ing a lane near the corner of Swanston-' street, a rope was thrown lasso-fashion; over liis beadj and \\e .was dragged -to the ground and pulled up ihe lane as quickly as possible for about thirty yards. Fortunately for himself he was strong, and catching hold of the rope he braced his leg against a stone and was pulled to an upright position. By, a' sudden jerk he got possession of the rope, and finding himself attacked by' from twelve to twenty of the larrikin class, he turned the rope's end into an effective weapon of resistance. By swinging the rope round his head he succeeded in keeping the ruffians off, and, regaining tile street* tbok refuge' in the nearest publichouse. At a meeting in Dunedin of the comittee appointed to further the scheme of emigration to Natal, held on Tuesday evening, the following extracts were read from the Natal Mercury of April 19 : — "The men we now want are gardeners, agriculturists with a little means; mechanics of all kinds who are good working men. We have several of that useful class * the handy shell-back,' who can be carpenter, bricklayer, painter, &c, but whose handiwork scarcely comes up to a tradesmen's standard., We want steady men, if possible. We have a fair to middling supply of storekeepers, clerks, agents, loafers, and lazy niggers. Government officials and Cape mounted riflemen are also pretty, numerous." " I will quote you our labor and market prices for comparison with your own, put should say that, with a supply of steady men, they would get lower, though not overstocked: — Carpenters, 10s. to 15s per day; bricklayers, the same ; black-' smiths, only one in the place ; wheel-' wrights, ditto ; laborers, 7s. 6d. to Bs. Market prices are — Beef sd. to 6d. ; mutton, 6d. to 7d. per lb. ; bread, 6d. for a l^lb. loaf ; potatoes, 255. per sack ; wheat, 30s. per sack ; and groceries in retail about 25 per cert, dearer than in Maritzburg or Durban." Some time ago, Mr Hannaford, of Auckland, advertised fora wife for a gentleman residing on one of the islands in the Pacific. A large number of applicants.forwarded their photos., letters, &c, for the coveted boon of wifehood.: An advertisement appears in the. " New Zealand Herald " intimating that; the gentleman in question has made* his selection, and that the young i lady is now on her way to her future home ;'; and Mr. Hannaford requests the other: applicants to call for their photosi aud 1 letters. He has informed the " Herald "i that there are several other unmarried 1 men on the same island in want of wives, but all are holding back until they see the selection already made for the manager of the statiion. New York suddenly begins to be aware that she is indebted to the sandplot orator, Dennis Kearney, for quite an addition to her population. In a few months our Chinese family has increased from six hundred to two thousand/ Whatever merits they possess do not appear above the surface. Wong Lo, Hung Kow, and Shang Lu, can be seen on laundry signs in every prominent street, and while in their laundry they may appear clean enough, where they live together, in their own quarters they are most disgustingly filthy^ and altogether an undesirable population. 1 freely acknowledge that the "bird of freedom" should shelter beneath his wings all the peoples of the earth, without distinction, but if he could sit down on the Chinaman, and stifle him in the operation it would he no worse for John, and a great deal better for the Eagle.—-' Broadbrim's' letter to the Westport Times. The Olago Daily Times has a stroDg orticle against the abandonment of the Gaming and Lotteries Bill, and says:—'•- '* Why is it dropped in this summary manner, ' like a hot spud/ is matter 6i mystery. We should have thought that, ail things considered, the House would have disposed of it in an hour, for surely there are not. half-a-dozen members who would venture to defend tba ' public gambling which has become such a mischievous scandal in this colony. There are how. advertised in th'e Dunedin papers alone, as anyone may
