A recent Sydney telegram says: — A clerk named Evans, in the Land Department, on Friday was sent to cash a cheque for £18, but changed the figures to £818, received the larger amount, returned to the office to avert suspicion, but has started since for San Francisco, per Cambrian. Steps have been taken to arrest him. Horseflesh (says the N.Z. Times) is a drug in the up-country market. A steed, such as Mark Twain described as a crate covered with hide, was sold from the pound at Bulls for one shilling. It is said to have been purchased by a butcher, who, however, reassured bis sausage consuming customers by declaring that he only wanted the hide.
