Aug 17, steamer Taiaroa, 228, Malcolm, for Picton, Wellington, and South. Passengers: Miss Dixon, Mrs Black, Mrs Parker, Messrs Parker, Atkinson, Lightband, Davis, Mason, Aldridgo, Marshall, Castle, Wright, M'Nab, Elliott. — cutter Midge, 16, Eure, for Waitapu. 18, steamer Lady Barkly, 30, Walker, for Golden Bay.
Capt. Edwin reports at 11 -10 a.m. :— "Bad weather approaching ; any direction between north and west and south-west. Glass will show further fall, and much rain." The Charles Edward arrived at Hokitika this morning,, and leaves for Greymouth tomorrow morning. The intention to launch the Kennedy yesterday was frustrated by the bad weather ; if the weather bas sufficiently moderated she will be floated this afternoon. The Murray Jeft Greymouth tbis morning, leaves Westport to-night, and should arrive here to-morrow evening. The Lyttelton arrived afc Blenheim yesterday afternoon, and is expected back tomorrow. . The Taiaroa arrived at Wellington at 7 a.m. to-day, and was to leave for Lyttelton at 1 p.m. The- Grafton leaves Wellington at 7 o'clock to night, will arrive here to-morrow morning, and sail for Westport and Greymouth at 2 p.m. A topsail schooner, which will probably prove to be the Dido from Oamaru, has been , signalled all che day. The Hinemoa, with the Suez mail, left Lyttelton for Wellington at 9 o'clock last nigbt. Tho Hawea leaves Wellington at noon to> morrow, will arrive here on Friday morning, and sail for Taranaki and Manukau at 6 p.m. same day The Wanaka crossed tho Manukau bar at 6 o'clock tbis morning, nnd as she has a large batch of cargo to land afc New Plymouth will remain there the greater part of . 'to-morrow. She will arrive here early on Friday morning, and sail for Picton, Wellington, and Lyttelton by the same tide at 8 a.m. The Wallace and Patea had a trial of speed together on Friday night last. The Patea left here about balf an hour before the ■Wallace, both being bound tor Wellington. But the. screw steamer stood no chauce against the paddle one, as she was pas&ed by the latter some time before she reached the Pass. Both steamers were compelled to seek shelter at Ohau Ray, and the- Patea left there some forty minutes before the Walla9e, aud was just making fast to the wharf at Wellington when the latter arrived there, the distance betweeu the two places being a little over twenty miles. The Wallace arrived from Wellington at 10 o'clock last night. She left here at 8-30 p.m. ou Friday, and got within a few miles of Wellington, when a heavy S.E. gale was experienced, which raged with such force thafc she was compelled to seek shelter afc Ohau Bay, where she remained uutil 7 a.m. on Sunday, when she sailed for Wellington, arriving there at 930 a.m. The Wallace was detained there owing .to bad weather until 9 a.m. yesterday, arriving here as above. She brings a full cargo, and bas on tooard about 20 diggera for the Olcarit-i diggings. She sails for West Coast ports and the Sounds at 7 o'clock this evening. The Southern Cross, which arrived at Auckland from Fiji on Monday, reports that "H.M.S. Wolverene struck on a reef at tho north east of Goro. She is said to bo considerably, damaged, and had six feefc of water in her hold, and was reported to be making three feet per hour.
