Wellington, Saturday night. A bailiff named Clifford was arrested this afternoon on a charge of perjury for swearing that he had delivered a summons whereas he had not done so. . Christchurch, Monday. Langford, who took strychinue on Saturday, died at one. o'clock yesterday. The Railway Picnic Committee handed in the balance in hand, £40, to the sick fund of the Railway Benefit Society, MatthewHenderson, a well-known resident in ChrietcDurch, was arrested in Wellington on a charge of deserting his wife and family. It is believed that he intended to sail for San Francisco. Bluff, Monday. The Arawata arrived at 7 a.m. and will sail at 5 p.m. for Dunedin. The Union Company have instructed their pursers not to supply the press with, passenger or cargo lints,,
New PLYsrotJTH, Monday. The steamer Rowena has been stranded at the mouth of the Waitara. She left the Waitaro wharf on Saturday at 2 o'clock with eleven passengers and a cargo of sheep for Manuknu, having in tow the ketch Forest Queen for Wellington As she was crossing the bar a heavy sea struck the steamer, washing away one of her boats, which is lost, and causing the tow-line to get foul of her propeller. The steamer being helpless, cut the ketch adrift, and was driven to the North Spifc, the ketch grounding on the north, side of the Waitara Iliver. The captain of the Forest Queen let go the anchor, which kept her in posi ion, butthe.tide was running out, each wave causing her to bump on the beach. An effort was made to get the ste&mer afloat, but it was fruitless, a 9 the tide was tunning out. The sheep and passengers were landed. Jußt after the Rowena went ashore a fireman on board her was taken suddenly ill, and before he could be brought ashore died. His name is Bailey, and he belongs to Auckland, having a wife and two children living there. An attempt was to be made to get the vessel off this morning. TiaiAßUj Monday. John Blair, formerly a receiving goods clerk at the railway, was committed for trial for embezzling £7 7s. During the last month of bis engagement he had torn tip waybills without entering the moneys received. Hia defalcations altogether amount to about £100. Auckland, Monday. At a meeting of railway employees on Saturday evening the Chairman announced that a petition signed by 200 had been forwarded to Wellington, praying the Government to reconsider the ten per cent reduction.
