DESTRUCTIVE FIRE IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, Wednesday. A destructive fire broke out in a house of ill-fame occupied by Margaret Baker. When the flames were first discovered they had a firm hold of the front portion of the building, rendering it impossible to save anything whatever. The strong wind blowing made the progress of the flames extraordinarily rapid. The fire theu spread to an unoccupied cottage owned by Mr Webb, and a workshop owned by F. Pagon, which were { soon lowered to the ground. The next building to catch was a four roomed cottage owned by Mrs Baker and occupied by her cook. Tbe cottage was immediately wrapped in flames, and its destruction lasted only a few minutes. Hero the fire was got under, and no further damage was done. Mrs Baker is said to be insured for £3000, but which offices are affected is not yet known. None of the others are insured. The origin is uu known, but is supposed to be owing to the i bursting of a kerosene lamp. The crews of Her Majesty's ships were ashore and rendered good service in saving property. His Excellency's racehorses were landed in 1 excellent condition from the Wakatipii this morning. It is understood that notwithstanding Sir Hercules' departure from the colony the horses will perform at the Canterbury meeting. The insurances on Mrs Baker's house was £1080 in the South British, of wbicb £350 was reinsured in the North British and £250 in the National. Archibald Wilson charged on the information of the District Engineer with the larceny of £247 belonging to the Government, was remanded until Friday. Auckland, Wednesday. The barque Lincoln from the Islands reports speaking the cutter Sovereign of the Sea from Rarotonga dismasted on the coast. The Lincoln supplied her with provisions, but owing to the heavy weather could not render further assistance.
