It will be seen by a telegram from our Wellington correspondent that the Railways Commission has recommended the postponement of the construction of the Nelson and West Coast railway. The report, from which we purpose giving some extracts tomorrow, contains some startling recommendations, and is likely to give rise to a good deal of adverse comment throughout the country; An affiliation case, Fanny Wise v. R. Thotflas, was heard before the Resident Magistrate to-day, and dismissed. Mr Fell appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Bunny for the defendant. Notwithstanding the wretched state of the weather last night the Shelbourue-street schoolroom was well filled on the occasion of an entertainment being given in aid of the building fund. The entertainment, which was of a very varied character, passed off most successfully, and those who had braved the weather, and were not deterred by the muddy condition of the streets and the darkness of the night, were amply rewarded for the courage they had displayed. The receipts amounted to a trifle over <£6. '■ Mr Mabin will hold a sale of furniture, &c , at the Plough Inn, Richmond, tomorrow at noon. A conveyance will leave his auction rooms at 9 a.m., returning as soon as the sale is over. Mr Mabin reports a sale of stock ex Patea from Patea yesterday, when steers averaging Bcwt fetched from £8 10s to £9 12s per head, and sheep 14s each.
