THE EARL OF DALHOUSIE.
The following short bio. rapbical sketch of tbis nobleman whose death was reported in our yesterday's telegrams is from " Men of the Time ":— Dalhousie (Karl of), The Right Hon Fox Maule Rnmeay, K.T , G.C 8., was born -ht Brechin Castle, Appr.il 22, 1801. His father, the late Lord Panmure, was. a younger son of the coble Scottish family of which the Earl of Dalhousie is fh«. heed, und a dp scend_nt of that Sir Aliao Ramsay celebrated in med.Eeval chronicles as "Tbe Flower of Koig' thood." Having been educated at the Charterhouse, Mr Fox Motile entered the »rmy as cn ensign io the 79.h Highlanders; sp.rved for several years in Canada, on the stbff of bis uncle, the la'e Eail of Dalhousie, and retired iu 1831, wiih the raok ocaptain. He was returned in thn Liberal interest for Perth-hire in 1835, and od tbe formation of the Melbourne Ministry in that year, .become UnderSecretary for the Home Department. Though ejected from the tion of Perthshire in 1837, 'he retained bis office, and wos, in 1838, elected member for tbe Elgin burghs. Returned a secood time in 1841, member for Perth, ho beosm9 Vice-President of the Board of Trade, acd on the restoration of the Wbi^B to power in 1846, Seer, tary of War, with a stain tbe Cabinet, which post he held tiil 1852, when the expiration of the EastIndia Company's oharter rendering it necessary for tbe Government to have a Minister of influence to direct the affairs of lonia, ha went to the Presidency of the Board of Control. The dissolution of the Ruesell cabinet prevented Mr Fox Maule from trying his powers as an Indian reforccer ; &nd he succeeded his father iu the pecrago, taking his place in the House of Lords ns Lord Panmure, April 13, 1852. Lord Panmure did not hold office in -Lord Aberdeen's! edn-ini'stration; but on the fot mation of Lcrd Pal ohms ton's first administration in 1855, he was appointed Minister of War. This post was uo sinecure; aod Lord Panmure, duiing part of the Crimean war, diecharged the duties devolving upon him with exemplary diligence. Hie lordship, who was created a Knight of the Thi_f.le ic 1853, and a Grand Cross of tbe Bath in 1857, succeeded to the earldom of Dalhousie on the death of his cousin, ihe late governor-genet..! of lodia, December 19, 1860. Bis l'ord- , ship, who hus taken an active part in ecclesiastical affaire, in nn iof.aen.iai member of the Free Church of Scotland. He was for some time Grand Master of the Freemasons in ..cosl.i_d, but resigned that poafc in .December, 1870.
