The following interesting item of news appears in the Sydney Town and Country Journal of a late date. It is from Mr J;P.D. (Mittagong): —lt is true that every unmarried man had to pay a tax to the Government in New Zealand, but not £2. It was 10s for every unmarried man over 21 years of age, hie not being a householder; and every householder, married or unmarried (man or woman), had £1 to pay yearly. I paid this tax for three years in the Province of Auckland, and it was then abolished. Many went to prison sooner than pay (14 days), and many householders allowed their goods to be seized by the Government, and in some cases costiuy £8 in place of one. Some years ago there was another tax, called the poll-tax, but when the collector went round he received much opposition from the women, some throwing hot, some cold, water on him, so that the Government had to give it up as a had job. I believe this also was the work of the Provincial Government of Auckland.
