NELSON AID SOCIETY. To the Editor or the " Evening Mail." Sir — I have been requested by the Committee of the Nelson Aid Societj' to ask you for space to call the attention of Iks public to the annual meeting of that Society, to be held to-morrow evening in the Masonic Hall. On that occasion facts will be laid before those present showing the efforts that have been made, and still require to ;be made, to help those cases of need arising from sickness and unavoidable misfortune, which cannot be provided for by regular Government provision. Although, happily, our poor and destitute are comparatively few, yet there are quite enough to demand not only the existence but the liberal support of this Society. There are not a few amongst those helped who have been saved and enabled to tide over a difficulty and time of trial through the help of the Association, and the existence of such a Society is a preventive to indis criminate charity, and also prevents duplicate assistance being rendered, which is the great evil at Home. The funds of the Society will be exhausted when next month's quota is drawn, and since no assistance is rendered, where employment is offered or may reasonably be obtained, tie Association cannot be said to encourage pauperism, but the reverse. It being a common centre, where all charitable persons may meet 'on the same platform, is of itself no small recommendation to it. Allow me, therefore, to iuvite attendance at the meeting to hear ' the facts which will be laid before it by , gentlemen well qualified to speak thereon. ! I am, &c, A. B. Sotek, Chairman Nelson Aid Society. July 16, 1880.
