Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, JULY 15, 1880.

It falls to our lot again to-day to record the death of another well known citizen and old settler. The Hou Nathaniel Edwards, whose name is so well known in connection with oue of the leading business firms of this town, passed away at nine o'clock this morning, after an illness which, though it first showed itself nearly twelve months since, has at the last been rapid and sevore. The prominent position he has occupied both as a business and a public man demands mere than a passing notice at our hands, but we are unable to day to do more than to announce his decease and to express our sympathy with his widow and family in their hour of trouble. Not only was a very great treat afforded the inmates of the Luualic Asylum last night, by the kiudly disposed ladies and gentlemen who jrecently took pare in the concert given in aid of the Asylum lecreation fund, and who repeated their programme last night, but the large gathering of general public admitted by special invitation also expressed themselves delighted with the various vocal and instrumental performances, Master Hill again coming in for very hearty applause. At the close of the concert a dance was improvised, patients and visitors taking part in the enjoymeut together, and the visitors having subscribed towards the recreation fund the proceedings terminated at the ordinary closing hour. The funeral of the late Mr It. Hadfield will take place to-morrow afternoon, when his remains will bo followed to the grave by the teachers and scholars of tbe Wesleyan Sunday School, of which he was the Superintendent. Those who are interested in establishing a musical Society in Nelson are reminded of the meeting to be held at the Harmonic Hall this evening. A discussion of an unusually acrimonious character appears to have taken place in the House last night on the motion by Mr Hall that Mr Hurst should act as Chairman of Committees in theplnce of Mr Seymour who, in the absence of Sir George O'Rorke through illness, has for the last few days been actingSpeaker. Mr Hurst is one of the "Aucklaud four," hence the bitterness displayed by the Opposition, The article on our fourth page to-day entitled " Among tbe Mormons " is taken from the Auckland Herald, to which paper it was supplied by a correspondent.
