Auckland, Thursday. Mr Wickeßam, the proprietor of the Auckland Free Lance, had his nose severely pulled yesterday by a member of the Frolique Company for condemning their entertainment, before seeing ifc, as another lot of Yankee trash. The other newspapers speak well of the performance. Wickesam did not get the advertisement, which is supposed to be the cause of his animus. Inveecargiix, Thursday. The investigation of the charge of manslaughter against Dr. Moffatt, of Winton, was resumed at the Police Court to-day, and resulted in the accused being committed for trial at the next sittings of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, himself in £200 and two sureties of £200 each. Timaru, Thursday. Both of the men concerned in the late sticking up case at Waihoa were brought before the Resident Magistrates at Waimate, and remanded. Their names are Eugene Ford and W. Polhptt. .„ j
CHRisTCHtmcH, Thursday. The Kaiapoi Woollen Factory Company held their half-yearly meeting to-day. Tbe report showed a balance of £2,649 on the half year. It was resolved to extend the capital to £1,000,000 in £25 shares, as the present machinery is quite capable of supplying the demand for the goods. Jane Eliza Leathwick, a widow 56 years of age, c. mmitted suicide by taking rat poison. Straitened circumstances are believed to be the cause. The weather continues unseasonably fine and dry. The Industrial Exhibition was opened by the Mayor afc noon to day, when there was a large atteudauce. Mr R. Allan, Chairman i of the Committee of management, delivered an iuaugural address, sketching the progress made in manufactures, arts, and science in New Zealand. The display of exhibits is very \ imposing, and includes many valuable articles The machinery comprises a weavers loom, ' tile press, boot sole sewing machine, potter?, wheel, &c, all at work. Nail making, grinding and other interesting processes are all being shown. Altogether there are nearly 200 exhibits. The Exhibition will be kept open till Saturday, and probably next week. Wellington, Thursday. The City Council iutend to resume stove breaking to afford employment to a large number of men. The Government will probably send a further detachment of men to Patea. Dunedin, Thursday. In the case Alves v. Corporation of Dunedin, the Court awarded the plaintiff £2600 and coats. The costs amount to nearly £4000. The Corporation offered £1200 before the case came on.
