The next of the Orient Line of steamers for Plymouth will be the Liguria, which leaves Melbourne on July 27. The ship Merope, bound from London to Wellington, pnssed Lyttelton heads on Monday night, and therefore should reach her destination to-day. She has on board two saloon passengers for Nelson — Mr and Mrs W. Wright. It is reported in Wellington tbat the officers and crew of the Government steamer Hinemoa have received notice that their services will be dispensed with at the end of the current month. The vessel will then be laid up in ordinary.
Owing to disclosures made by the cargobroachers on board the ship Chile (says an
Auckland telegram^ the polico have got complete information as to how the plundering of the cargo went on during the voyage. How the Bhip escaped being blown np while drunken sailors roamci about the bold over guhpowder barrels and crates of goods is miraculous.
It will bo remembered (says the JN.Z,
Times) that the missing Colleen Bawn left this port on Saturday, May Ist, to cross the
Straits for Havelock, and has not siuce been heard of. In counectiou with her disappearance a fact was brought under our notice yesterday. On the following Sunday night after her departure, the wind in the
Straits having meanwhile been light southerly sooie residents at Vogeltowu saw two rockets fired far away seaward as if from some vessel in distress. The barque Sopliia R Luhrs waß the only large vessel known then to be in the Straits, and "unless the
rockets came from her it is possible that the .' signal was from the missing Colleen Bawn, after striking on some hidden rock or meeting with some other sudden peril. It is stated that on board the schooner cither as one of the crew or as passenger, was a new arrival by the ship Maravnl, from London, who was reputed to be of a high English family, and -the inheritor of large property, but who was indulging his wandering Bohemian proclivities by knocking about the world. All hopes of any traces of the little schooner turning up are now futile, but still any circumstance pointing even remotely to the time of her loss possesses a melancholy interest.
