EARLY CLOSING.

To the Editor ov the " Evening Mail."

Stß^-t pbfier-fre that the Earlj- Closing Association is stili on the' mote, but as yet we do not see much good resulting from it, the majority of the grocers and general storekeepers beiug still open until eight or ten o'clock every night. I think very little of any man ■who looks upon his employees as slaves', and expects them to work night after night until near feed time ; and those individuals are still more to bldor-e who, living on the premises, keep a light in their shops to tempt the passer-by, while they themselves are qvtietty warming their toes Tiu the snug parlor behind. These persons, perhaps, do not consider the fact that by their remaining open they cause others who do keep assistants to remain opon also, and thus share in promoting a system of slavery. The public should take the matter up oil behalf of the assistants, and compel the tradesmen to close at a reasonable time by abstaining from dealing at the late shops, and making their purchases before six o'clock in the evening. Surely 8 a.m to 6 pirn, is long enough for any place of business to remain- open. Out Banks, Government oflices, lawyers, merchants, shippers, <&c. all close from 3 to 5 p.m., and why should our trade assistants, probably the worst paid aud hardest worked of all, be consigned to a life composed of all bed and work ? I, for one, shall trade, as far as possible, at the early shops. Lot others do the same, and the employers will soon find that it is to their advautage to be liberal to their hands,- -lam, &c, ; Householder.
