To the Editor op the " Evening Mail." j Sir— The Nelson public may not, perhaps, be aware that a Society which, during its many years of existence in our midst, hag j afforded much natural enjoyment to thousands of people, is now almost defunct The Nelson Harmonic Society owns an excellent room, a good pianoforte, and probably the best library of music in the colony, and is entirely free from debt, and yet there are now only about a dozen subscribing members on the books; there has been no concert for months, and the weekly practices seem to have come to an end. My present purpose is nofc to inquire into the cause of this state of things, bufc only to ask the Nelson public through your columns whether they will or will not support a fresh Society to be formed for the practise and production of standard vocal and instrumental music. With a Tiew of ascertaining tbis I have ventured to call a public meeting to be held iv the Harmonic Hall on Thursday evening next at eight o'clock. I particularly wish it to be understood that the meeting is to be a public one, in no way confined to, or even connected witb, the present Society, but open lo every one and I appeal to all who take any interest in music to attend and say whether we sball have a musical Society here or not, and if an affirmative vote is passed by a sufficient number of persons to make it appear tbat i such a Society will be a success, then to decide the amount of subscription and other j details of management. I believe the Trustees of the old Society will be ; willing to recognise a Society so formed, by whatever name it might be called, as entitled to the use of the properties of the Neleon Harmonic Society, and I hope the present members will join with me in giving it hearty support. It only needs the help of the public to make the scheme a success. — I am, &c, Charles Y. Fell.
