Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, JULY 13, 1880.
An advertisement appears in another column inviting all those in Nel-on who take an interest in music to meet at the Harmonic Hall ou Thursday evening, to consider the desirability of forming a Society, which shall be tbe means of bringing together all the musical talent which undoubtedly is to be found in the town of Nelson. The Harmonic Society, which has existed fot so manj years and afforded so many pleasant evenings to lovers of good music, although in a most flourishing position financially, bus not of late, from one cause and another, been progressing so satisfactorily as couid be wished, and it ia hoped that some arrangement may be arrived at on Thursday, whereby a Btrong Society may be built up on a sound foundation. The following extract from the Committee's last annual report shows how prosperous is the ' Harmonic Society from a financial point of view :— " Entirely free from liability of any kind, they possess property of the aggregate value of JESOO, made up of the . following items :— Land and room, £200 ; music, £170 ; piauo,
— — - - , . - ; £80; furniture, £50. And not only ia the i practice room, with the ground on which it stands, the unencumbered property of the Society, but ifc is actually a source of revenue, being let for meetings at certain nights iv tho week at a rental of £1 3 per annum." The musical library includes several uew . works, which were selected by Mr Fell on his recent visit to England, and have never yet been put in practice here, aud ifc is believed that the trustees will allow the uso of the whole of these properties to the Society which may result from Thursday night's meeting. A letter from Mr Fell, the convener of that meeting, who has always taken a keen interest in musical matters in Nelson, will be found elsewhere, and we commend it to the pel'usal of all who are desirous of encouraging the practice of standard music, both vocil and instrumental. The work of retrenchment is about to be commenced in Nelson, the Postmaster having received a telegram to day to the effect tbat after the 31st inst., the Post Oflice at the . Port will be closed. The saving thus effected will be about £150 a year. W'fi call attention to the entertainment advertised to take place at the Theatre Royal to night in aid of the Hospital convalescent fuud. A very large amount of time and trouble has been expended upon its preparation, and we have every reason to believe that it will prove eminently successful. Hall of Commerce Clothing Department. — T.
