Messbs Acton Adams and Pitt were passengers by the Stella from Wellington on Saturday evening. The former returned to Wellington by the Murray yesterday, and the latter will leave by the Wallace this evening. A telegram was received by Mr Greenfield from Wellington on Saturday evening, stating tbat, in accordance with a numerously signed memorial which had been forwarded from here to the Government, hares had again been proclaimed game in tbis district, and for tbe future will be protected as such. A nasty accident occurred on Saturday afternoon to Mr Moynihan,- tbe assistant clerk in the Resident Magistrate's Court, who was playing football, when he was thrown down with such force as to fracture bis right collar bone, which will incapacitate him for work for some days. The annual meetings of the parishioners of Christ Church and All Saints' will be held in the respective Sunday Bchool-rooms thia evening. • A Christchurch telegram says that Graham Flowers, the notorious cattle stealer, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment. A letter from Mr James Grove, enclosing one from Sir W. Fox in reply to a remonstrance addressed to him by that gentleman regarding the beer tax, is unavoidably held over until to-morrow. The Ordnance Prize Firing, after many delays, took place on Saturday afternoon on the mud flat, the weather being all that could be desired. Three rounds of solid shot and three of segment shell were fired from each guv by the 4rtillery ? and a like number by

The Waimea Rifles held their first annual -meeting in the Spring Grove school-room on •^Monday evening'last, Captain Franklyn in the chair. The report and balance-sheet showing the Corps to be in a sound financial condition, were read and adopted Lieut. Mcintosh, as Hon. Secretary, and Mr Lightband, as Hon. Treasurer, were both re-elected, and received votes of thauks for their past services. Finance and Shooting Committees were also elected. After some discussion, it was agreed that in future tbe fines for nonattendance at Company parades be strictly enforced A vote of thanks to Captain Franklyn for presiding brought the meeting to a close. * A correspondent writes :—tThe.-inhabi-tants of Rich nond -seem to appreciate the efforts made for their winter evening recreation, judging from the liberal patronage accorded by them to the three concerts held this season. The. new school-room which has . been used for the purpose supplies"' a Vant long.felfc in the district, and it is to be hoped tho"powerß that be will. continue to grant the use of the building for Buch purposes on future occasions. The concert 1 given ( on Friday night in aid of the Church Parsonage Building Fund was undoubtedly a great sue- * cess. It- was an agreeable .surprise to find that we had so much real: mubieal talent in our midst, ani the ladies and gentlemen who so kindly contributed to bur enjoyment must, have been encouraged by the warm approval* shown by 'the delighted audience. A" long ■programme was provided, and this was considerably lengthened by tbe number of encores demanded.
