Captain Pietersen of the Union Company's steamer Taiaroa died at Dunedin this morning, a telegram to that effect having been received here by the local agent. The news of his death will be received with much regret by those who have ..: travelled with him and experienced his ur- >. banity and courtesy. Captain Pietersen was . ■, here in his steamer about a fortnight ago, so . , that his illness has been very short. The Union Company's time table for July , notifies that in future the Maori will run between Dunedin and Timaru twice a week; the Albion will take the place of the Rotorua - this month, the latter steamer having been ''-'* placed in the dock at Port Chalmers to. "undergo her periodical inspection; and the Taiaroa will resume her running on the 18th, ,. the Wellington having, taken her place this < trip, while she is undergoing an overhaul. An exciting race took place between the Wallace and Wakatu on their laßt trip between Wangenui and this port. Both r, steamers -cast off from the wharf together about iive o'clock on Saturday afternoon, .. but the former being a much longer steamer , . than her rival, could not turn round so quickly ;.{. as the latter, which, in consequence, got the start of the Anchor Liner. The Wallace ;.. then opened out and going down the river rapidly gained on the Wakatu, and shortly , ■ after crossing the bar passed her. Nothing more was seen of her until yesterday morning, there then being a fresh wind blowing, jghen the lights of a steamer were seen of the Wallace. This proved to be. the Wakatu, which under fall sail was comingjalong at a good rate, and shortly after ■p^sse.d, the Wallace,' arriving here some . three-quarters 6f r an hour before her. The night was very dark, while there was a hasty . sea running which favored the screw r steamer. " The sails of the Wakatu helped her along greatly, as she is as fast under canvas as under steam. On the other hand had there been a slight head wind and smooth sea the Wallace would have mainV 1 tamed the lead throughout. .
