At a crowded meeting last night convened hy tbe Committee of the unemployed, resolutions were carried accepting the offer of the Goverumeufc re the village settlements and wages on the public works, ard to the effect that, should the Government not adhere to their offers, a self supporting Emigration Society will be formed. Mr Taylor, the American consul, cautioned the unemployed that America was not always prosperous, but that hard times were experienced there as well as elsewhere. He said he was quite certain that the American Government would not pay for immigrants from anywhere, when it was remembered that 34.000 emgrated to the United States in April at their own cost. Timaru, Saturday. An amusing race of 100 yards between the landlord of tbe Grosvenor Hotel and a Veterinary Surgeon, both weighing over eighteen stone, for £10 a side, took place this morning resulting in the latter winning by a stride. Considerable sensation has been caused by the discovery that the portion o2 the breakwater which recently slipped out, necessitating the breaking of the monolith, had been propped up with bags of concrete instead of resting on solid blocks.
