r- : . ;: ' .- Dunedin, Wednesday. At Weatherstone's a child named Martin has been burned to death. Satisfactory accounts have been received ot the shipment {Of antimony to Melbourne from Waipori. , Thursday. The late rains have caused heavy floods in the Taieri River and there are several slips on the railway line. A telegram from Naseby states that the snow on the mountains is melting. Oamaru, Wednesday. The heavy rains of the past two days have caused considerable damage to the South railway line at the Dunedin end, causing ths detention of the express train for four hours. Tbe Duutroon branch line is also flooded. Thursday. The heavy floods have not caused so much damage to the" railway line in this district as was anticipated. The Duntroon branch was flooded at Black Point and the train was unable to run yesterday afternoon, but as soon as the water subsides the trains will be resumed. The trains between Timaru and Oamaru were impeded at the Waimate Junction, but the damage was repaired in time to allow the Christchurch express to come through. This morning's train from Oamaru to Palmerston was delayed an hour through some damage to the line between Otepopo and Hampden, and the Dunedin express did not arrive at Oamaru till six instead of 20 minutes after twelve. No damage has been done to the breakwater although the sea was running very heavy. Wellington, Thursday. Arrived— Pareora from London 97 days out... , The passengers are all well. An apprentice named George Freeman, aged 13, a half caste and a native of Christchurch, wbile engaged at the main chain; fell overboard and, was drowned, all endeavors to rescue him being unsuccessful. andPlaisted, a passenger from Melbourne per Albion^ was transhipping in the roadstead, when the stage from the Albion to the Waipara turned over and he fell into the sea » and was drowned. The night was pitch dark Invercargill, Thursday. » Dr. Moffett, of.Winton, was arrested yesterday afternoon on a charge of manslaughter, 1 and remonded, pending the inquest. It 1 seems that he was called upon to attend 1 Mrs Cameron in her confinement, bufc failed to successfully deliver the child, and went away, and when asked to return it is alleged that he refused. Eventually another doctor was called in, but he was too late to be of any real use, the child being dead and the mother dying afterwards. Christchurch, Thursday. The following suggestive advertisement appears in the Times this morning J—- " Wanted— All true Irishmen and Catholics to assemble on July 2, at Cathedral Square. The peace of the city must be preserved." Yesterday a number of gentlemen by invitation attended a meeting of the committee of the unemployed for the purpose of advising . them what to do. With reference to the Government offer of wages and work on the railway, and village settlement, the committee were advised to accept the offer, and the committee decided to recommend the unemployed to do so.
