Wellington, Tuesday night. A mass meeting of the unemployed to-day decided to petition the Government for work. ■ * ._ .' Wednesday. The Government bave determined to close the Telegraph offices now open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m at 5 pm., re-opening them for one hour at seven o'clock. Messages can thus be sent at as late an hour as at present, but those not despatched by five will.have to wait till seven. Auckland, Tuesday. Two sailors were brought up this morning for broaching cargo on board the Chile. They were remanded, as others are also suspected. The mail steamer sailed for Sydney at six a.m. In coming alongside the wbarf Bhe bumped, but did not do much damage. Christchtjbch, Wednesday. At a public meeting at Leeston a resolution favorable to the property tax was carried, with a recommendation that the £500 exemption be reduced as low as possible and all personal property excluded. At a public meeting at Akaroa it was resolved to request Mr Montgomery to urge on the Government the great necessity -for the immediate construction of the second portion of the railway to Little River. Mr Hoskins leaves shortly for Australia He took a benefit at the theatre last night. At the Selwyn County Council yesterday a resolution was read from the Patea Council expressing the opinion that the County Councils should be constituted Land Boards. The Selwyn Council decided that such proceedings are not desirable. The last of the Norfolk's passengers was released from quarantine yesterday. Invekcakgill, Wednesday. A friend of a Southern M.H.JR,, apparently from information received, is giving large odds that a dissolution will take place in thirty days. The Borough Council have agreed to a loan of £20,000 tor street improvements.
