Wellinglon, Thursday. A deputation from the Licensed Victuallers Conference waited on the Government this morning, with suggested amendments to the Licensing Bill. The reply was that the matter would be considered. At ihe University Senate the following report of the Examiners was paused: — L.L.B. Degree: Frederick Fitchett, 8.A., and Robfc. Henry Kattray, 8.A., are each granted the L.L.B. Degree. Honors: James Hay, Ist class in languages and literature, and Ist class in political science ; William Henry West, 8.A., has passed the first examination for 11.L.8.5 Frederick Fitcbett, Ist class in political science; to George Montgomery '.he medical scholarship was awarded. Kesolved: That James Hay, B A., and Frederick Fitehett, 8.A., having taken honors, be both admitted to the degree of M A.; that Anne Bolton, Andrew Cameron, Heleu Connor, William Heury Herbert, James Ronaldson Thornton, and Herbert VVilliaii Williams do pass for BA. Senior scholarships will be awarded to ths following candidates : — Margaret Lilian Florence Edger for mathematics; William Brookless Douglass for Greek; Benjamin Michael Connal for Latin; John Innes for English; Gertrude Grierson for English; Jotiu King Davis for Latin; William Fidler for latin, French, and Mental Science; Alexander Montgomery for Zoology; Charles Chilton for Mathematics; William Dean Milne for Lntin; William Henry Herbert for Chemistry aud Physical Science. Votes of thanks were passed to Dr Carpenter for the trouble he has taken in the management of the last examination, to Mr Carleton for the successful arrangements for the examination, aud to Mr Thomas Douse, chief clerk in the University of London, for his services in the conduct of the examination. Dcnedin, Thursday. The carnival has closed with gross takings of £2200. Mail advices say that the Australian cricketers have issued a challenge to the gentlemen players of England, the entire proceeds of the match to go to the cricketers' fund. The Commission appointed to inquire into the Volunteers affair at Ashburton report that the evidence is insufficient to convict anyone concerned of either misconduct or theft, the whole affair being exaggerated by the press and public. The officers of Companies had recommended the dismissal of three of the Waikari men, one of whom has since resigned, and two of the Port Chalmers Navals. Auckland, Thursday. A cable via Sydney dated London June 15, says that serious disturbances are reported from Ireland, An organised attack was made upon the landlords in several places. In one parish in Leitrim a landlord resisted the attack and in the fight that ensued one peasant was killed and others were injured. Several serious riots are reported from other parts of Ireland, particularly in Coutty Mayo where numbers of evictions have taken place. Invercaugill. Thursday. The wife of a publican in North Invercargill was found dead in her bed. Several severe bruises on the body excited suspicion of violence. The inquest commenced jesterday and was adjourned for medical evidence. A meetiog of the Licensed Victuallers resolved to ask Government if the Commissioners are acting from instructions received or on their own responsibility in reference to the notices sent to licensees of wooden hotels about refusing their licenses unless the houses are built of brick, stone, or concrete; also that a memorial be forwarded to the Government drawing attention to the excessive powers of licensing Commissioners, and the arbitrary powers exercised in this district, and asking the right to appeal to a higher Court in case the applications for renewals are refused.
