In the House of Commons, Mr Labouchere introduced a motion to permit Mr Bradlaugh, Who refused to take the oath, to make on affirmation instead. A long and animated debate enSued, lasting over two days. Mr Gladstone aud other prominent Ministers supported Mr Labouchere's motion, which was, however, negatived on a division.
