Wellington, Friday. The following message has been received from the Lord Mayor of Dublin for circulation among the Irish Relief Committees in New Zealand : — " While acknowledging with the utmost gratitude the magnificent contributions received, I feel bound to say further .that any assistance which can be extended will be mnch needed duriog tbe next two months. I Avould, therefore, ask that your subscription lists be not closed, and that any further aubscriptionsmay be forwarded." Dunedin, Friday. A meeting of the publicans and brewers was held to day to consider tho Beer Tax and Licensing Acts. Tbe brewers iutimated that they intended to charge tho Boer Tax on the publicans. Two delegates were appointed from each side to go to Wellington, if necessary, to work in conjunction with the other Associations in the repeal of the tax. Regarding tbe new Licensing Act, the following are the amendments proposed : — That Clubs pay a license fee of £50, and be subject to police supervision and the operation of the local option clause ; that wholesale licenses be £50, also subject to local option ; that the only restrictions as to barmaids be that they be not employed' over ten hours a day. Saturday. Public meetings at Roslyn and Mosgiel last nigbt passed resolutions in favor of the Property Tax. Christchurch, Friday. The brewers were caught napping by the new tax, and the police visited all the establishments early. In one instance they caught a bottler who had got wind of the charge conveying a large quantity of liquor from tb» premises, and turned it back. Saturday. A meeting of the Licensed Victuallers Association of Hawke's Bay was held yesterday, when they carried tbe followiug resolution : —" That the licensed victuallers of Hawke's Bay deem the imposition of 6d per gallon on Colonial and imported beer to be a great injustice to the trade and general public, and that it is a gross injustice to place such an imposition upon a colonial industry that is already heavily taxed ; a copy of this resolution to be forwarded to the members of the House of Representatives for tbis Province." The Collector of Customs and Inspector Bullen proceeded to Waitara last night and made a seizure of the Hannah Mokau on behalf of the Government. Te Whiti has ingeniously turned the road making and telegraph erection into a fulfilment of his prophecy that tbe Governor wonld come to him. He tells the natives that the wire is being brought to Parihaka so that he can talk with the Governor, and, therefore, the Governor was coming to him as he prophesied years ago. Timaru, Saturday. The Supreme Court to-day is occupied with the Waimate arson case in which Clarke and his wife, a milliner, Hayes, a farmer, and Thompson in Clarke's employ, are all charge with setting fire to the shop. The case is likely to be a long one. The Chamber of Commerce yesterday passed a resolution recommending the abolition of the property tax, and tbat taxes on tea and sugar, and school rates be imposed instead. It was estimated that the house tax for education of £1 per house, and five ; shillings per head school fee would produce £110,000 net revenue.. The Committee re ported in favor of the land tax, which was sturdily supported by_ the Mayor and other members, but eventually it was resolved that neither a land nor property tax was advisable at present. Auckland, Saturday. Two boys named Foreman and Brown were charged at the Police Court this morning with misappropriating a £5 note. It appeared that they picked it up on the floor of the Thames Hotel and divided the amount.
