Greymouth, Thursday. Ifc is rumored thafc a most important discovery has been made by the Long Tunnel Tail Race Company. They have been two and a half years bringing their tunnel in through a reef which exists between Dunstan Flat and the Terem«kau liver, and have just broken through into the wash dirt which for 30 feet averages one grain to the dish. This i« 130 feet below the surface, and as the lowest ground at preseut worked has been 40 feet, this discovery ia very important, as all , ground below this depth ia workable by ground sluicing, which means nearly the whole of the goldfields. Timaru, Thursday. At the Criminal sessions, Judge Johnston, addressing the Grand Jury, expressed the hope that the Legislature would so amend the laws relating to the sale of drink as to prevent licensed persons having a pecuniary : interest in drunkenness. A rahbiter, named unknown, has been found dead in the woolshed of the Woodburn station. Poisoned wheat was found ou the ground and traces of it in l;is mouth. It ia supposed that he committed suicide, or was inadvertently poisoned. It is feared that the Stewart Island boat Pride of the South is lost. She left the Island on Friday, and has not been beard of since. Her crew consisted of three men under an old resident known as Bob Davidson.
