EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board met yesterday. Present — Messrs Barnicoat, Wastney, Bout,, Dencker, Graham, Campbell, Malcolm, and the Bishop of Nelson. - "- Resolved, Mr Scott's letter of explanation having been read, that the account be paid. Resolved, Tbat in reporting on the applications for vacant teachershipa the Board of Examiners present to tho Education Board the name of the person most eligible for tho post, aud add also tho names of other applicants whom the Board of Examiners consider to bo eligible, with a view' to such names being forwarded to the Corntnitteo. Resolved, That when applications are invited for assistant teachershipa the Inspector ba requested to prepare examination papers to test the educatioual fltuess of those applicants whose qualifications would be otherwise unknown to the Board. Resolved, That the report of tho Board of Examiners, as amended, be adopted. (See Appendix A.) Kesolved, That in all cases of illness of teachers, notice must be given aa soon as possible to the Local Committee to enable substitutes to be provided, and that for one month the usual salaries will be paid to such teachers, but for louger periods of sickness each case will bo decided on its merits at the next meeting of the Board. Resolved, That the Board much regrets the misunderstanding referred to in Mr Husband's letter of April 22ud, and begs to inform him that steps have been taken to prevent the occurrence of similar misunderstandings for the future, and that the Secretary write Mr Husband to that effect. Resolved, That tho matter of a school for the Lyell district be adjourned until after the election of the Local Committee, and that then the Committee be consulted as to whether any suitable building be available. Resolved, That the statement of account of the Board's finances not being sufficiently comprehensive, the same be ameuded for the next meeting, and that the application from Westport be adjourned for a month longer. Resolved, That tho Richmond Committee bo empowered to expend a sum not exceeding £10 in fencing school aero, and in placing a culvert over. ditch. Resolved, That the Secretary write to Mr C. W. Moore, calling his attention to the fact that he has not yet commenced the erection of Haven Road school, and that the building is much needed. Resolved, That Mr Ellis supply to the contractor complete tracings of the drawings, and copy of the specifications of Haven Road schools. Resolved, That the offer of the Temperance Hall for use as a school be declined. Resolved, With reference to correspondence from the Committee of Addison's Elat school aud the teacher, that a copy of Mr Maher'a letter be sent to tho Committee, and a copy of the Committee's letter be sent to Mr Maher. Resolved, That the matter of suggestions as to school appliances for Brightwater be left with the Inspector. Resolved, That Miss Coveney be requested to furnish the particulars referred to in her letter as hers is a very unusual application to come before the Board. Resolved, That Mrs Hansen's resignation of the Charleston school be accepted, and that a successor be advertised for at the same salary. Resolved, That the application for the Bum of £12 for shingling the schoolroom at Motupiko be granted, such sum not to be exceeded. Resolved, That tho Upper Wakefield Committee be authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £5 10s, for a closet and cupboard, and that the Inspector furnish the Committee with a blackboard. The other applications of this Committee could not be granted. Resolved, That the application of the Lower Moutere Committee for a sum of £30 be postponed until next month, and that Mr Dencker in the meantime visit the school, and report on the subject at the next Board meeting. Resolved, That a sum not exceeding £10 be granted the Spring Grove Committee for the purpose of removing and rebuilding an outhouse. A communication from the Town Committee having been read with respect to the state of the roof of the room in which Mias Kitching's school is held, and which belongs to Mr Campbell, that gentleman promised to at once have the same put in good repair. At the request of the Town Committee, it was resolved that the sum of £2 10s be paid to Mr Bluraer for conducting Miss Snart'a school during her illness. Resolved, That the Town Committee be allowed the sum of £3 for the purchase of Natural History and other plates for the school-room 3 Resolved That Mra Worley be asked to re-consider the matter of her resignation. _ Resolved, That Mr John Baker be authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £2 10a in repairing roof of house in Brook-street, occupied by him, (in the manner suggested) and to deduct ths cost of the same from hiß rent. Resolved, That the design of a school at Karamea, submitted by Mr Ellis, be ap proved, and that alternative tenders for the erection of the same in iron and wood be advertised for. Appendix A. The Board of Examiners met on Wednesday, June 2nd. The various applications for vacant teacherships were considered, when, for Waimea West school, Messrs Andrew Dawson, John Moore, John Roby, and G. A. Blumer were considered to be eligible for the appointment. In the opinion of the Board of Examiners Mr Andrew Dawson was the most eligible.' Mistress of Brightwater — Mrs Hansen and

Miss Suuley were considered eligible for the appointment. In -the opinion of the Examiners Mrß Hansen was the most eligible of the applicants. „ Assistant Teacher, Tasman-street schoolIn the opinion of thc'Examiners Miss Johnson was the only eligible candidate. Assistant Teacher, Reefton school— Miss E. Campbell and Miss Louisa Muller were in tho opinion of the Examiners the two most eligible candidates. Assistant Teacher, Black's Point— ln the opinion of the Examiners Mrs Jacques, Miss Melnnes, ahd Miss Hannah Prentice were the three most eligible applicants.
