INTERPROVINCIAL.

Wellinwtok-, Tuesday. It appears that the fatal accident to the man Gilchrist, who was shot at the Upper Hutt yesterday afternoon, happened in thia way:- -Deceased fired at a bird and missed it, and called to his friend to fire at it, and while the latter was making his way to fire, the gun exploded,, and its contents entered deceased's abdomen, killing him instantly. Dunedin, Monday. Shortly before 11 o'clock on Saturday night a fire broke out in a building iv Han-over-street. The fire apparently obtained a powerful hold before it was seen, anil wood being principally employed in the building it obtained almost complete mastery for a time. The place was conip'etely gutted. A brick wall intervened between it and the adjoining shop occupied by Mr Hale, picturefraoier, so that his premises escaped entirely. Regarding the origin, it may be best described as a mystery, but there are one or two somewhat singular circumstances about the affair. The building, two-storeyed, waa one of six rooms. It was in the occupation of John Pattinson (known in connection with the firm of Armstrong and Pattinson, labor agents) whoso wife carries ou a millinery business. He and his wife left the place a few minutes before the fire broke out, and are understood to have left Dunedin by the 11.30 am. south tram. Pattinson was a tenant only, and had his stock insured recently in the Transatlantic office for £150. Those who first got an entrance to the shop state that they looked about for property to save, but could find nothing except a few books. It is not certain in which part of the building the flames originated, whether in the front or back, but they certainly spread with surprising rapidity. Pattinson did not return to discover the fate of his premises when the alarm rang of fire in the ward. The owner of the building is Henry Hawker, a resident of Balclutha. His insurance is either £300 or £400 in the Standard. The police are endeavoring to solve tho mystery as to the origin. Tuesday.
