The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, MAY 24, 1880.

The member for the Buller addressed his constituents at Westport on Friday night, and, as will be Been by our telegrams, he took the opportunity of speaking in high terms of the present Government. Although Mr Fisher can scarcely be regarded as one of the leading members of the House, such commendation coming from him has a peculiar Biguificance, as he was elected as a supporter of the Grey Ministry. The Queen's Birthday has broken brightly, and there is every prospect of a pleasant holiday being spent by those who have for the day cast aside all business cares, and are bent upon enjoying themselves. A royal salute was fired by the Artillery Company at eight o'clock this morning, and at halfpast nine the Town Volunteers paraded at ! the Syrnons' Memorial, and proceeded to the railway station to meet their brothers in arms from the country districts who have come in to take part in the prize firing at the Maitai butts. " Old Ben Crisp " and his big gathering of little ones are parading the streets aa we go to press, and no doubt there will be merry doings among the children before they retire to rest to-night, tired out with their day's play, and full of gratitude to their good old friend for his thoughtfulness in providing amusement for them. The Naval Brigade fired a salute from their guns on the Boulder Bank at 8 o'clock this morning. Those who want amusement this evening will be able to find it either at the promenade soiree at the Theatre Royal, where prizes are to be offered for the best conundrums on " Matrimony," and a capital performance is on view, or at the Provincial Hall, where the Naval Brigade's ball is to take place. Residents in the Waimea will also be able to Bpend a pleasant evening, as entertainments of an attractive character are to be provided both at Richmond and Wakefield.
