Tibiaru, Saturday. Considerable excitement has been occasioned here by the notification that Mr Clnlee (?) has been appointed property tax assessor for the Levels District ; to .which another well known resident named John Thompson had been appointed and ;gazetted .originally. _ Since . his appointment. Thompson has applied in vain to the Deputy Assessor to be sworn in, and now . he is informed that his appointment has been cancelled, the only reason assigned being "Public Opinion." This singular affair is by many construed as a politicaljob, and Thompson having given up a-permanent situation to fill the appointment Intends suing for his rights. Campbell, a farmer from Pareora, had his head and limbs severely crushed and bruised this morning through a cart that he was driving capsizing on him. Wellington, Saturday. A fresh slip occurerd on the WellingtonFeatherston railway this morning near Kaitokij causinga hallast engine to get off th.e:Jine, and making a complete obstruction, but it will be clear by Monday morning. Westport, Saturday. i Mr J. B. Fisher addressed his constituents last evening. He thought the property tax would be repealed next session, and would support as a substitution a beer tax and an increase of the land tax to id. He gave the credit to the Ministers of being good business men and just the sort required in the present condition of the colony. He could not say i ■what he would do next session, but be would always be found with the Liberals. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously. Dunedin, Saturday. ■;. At the Port Chalmers Police Court Henry was committed for trial for stealing ' jellewery valued at £69 from a passenger by the Te Anau. ;
