The mails per John Elder via Brindisi were delivered here to-day. .- . - May 20. A meeting of the Conservative party was held to-day, at which Earl Beaconsfield made a speech. His Lordship referred to the result of the elections, and said he could only attribute the defeat of the Conservatives to the desire felt by the electors for a change in the Ministry. He stated that he would retain the leadership of his party, and advocate a dignified^ opposition to the Liberals, and the formation of proper local Conserval tire organisations throughout the country Earl Carnarvon, who resigned his position in the late Ministry in 1878 in consequence of its Eastern policy, was present at the meeting. . .. Paris, May 20. The French war ship Finisterre has sailed with the exhibits for the Melbourne Exhibition.
