London. May 13. The homeward mails via Brindisi were delivered to-day. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England amounts to £1,587,500. At the wool sales to-day 9,800 bales were catalogued, making a total of 215,600 offered since the opening There was less demand, and the tone of the sale was occasionally easier. The withdrawals amount to about 17,000 bales. Consols, 99f . New Zealand Five Per Cent Xoan, lO4£. The Australian cricketers commenced their first match to-day at Southampton against eighteen gentlemen of Hampshire. The weather was fine. The Australians "went in first and scored 250. Their innings •was a fine one, and the play was much admired. Murdoch made the top score of 97, and Boyle made 50. Both were caught out. The Englishmen went in, and had two ■wickets down for 43, when the stumps were drawn. The market for Australian and New Zealand breadstuff s is unchanged, Adelaide bciDg at 52s ex warehouse, and New Zealand brands at 4.3s ex ship, and 49a ex warehouse ; Australian tallow is at last quotation 32s 6d for best beef, and 34s for best mutton. May 14. Prince Leopold hag started on his tour through Canada and the United States. It is stated that the Chief Secretary for Ireland, the Right Hou W. E. Fon»ter, recommends the adoption of the policy of coercion towards Ireland, with a view to settle the difficulties which beaet the Government in that country.
