To the Editor of the • Evening Mail.' Sir, — There is a practice in force in the Colony of Victoria, at all schools, in regard to the weekly holiday, which I should like to see adopted here. I refer to the whole of Saturday being given instead of half of Wednesday and half of Saturday, as is the custom in Nelson. By this means the young people get one clear evening in tba week, on which they can give themselves up to indoor games, or the reading of some lighter production than their daily literary food at school. The mind thus gets some relaxation, instead of being, as now, wearied with the learning of lessons every night in the week. I would ask how we adults, at least such of us as go through our daily routine of business, would like all our evenings also to be spent in a like manner, and yet such ia the case with the young people whose cause I now plead. There are many other reasons I could bring forward in support of tbe Victorian practice, but I consider the one I have given quite sufficient ; and I would like to see the Governors of the Nelson College take the matter into their very serious consideration with a view to setting an example, which would, no doubt, be speedily followed, and thus give our young school folks one evening in the week for mental relaxation. I am, &c, Paeent. Nelson, April 30, 1880.
