Sydney, Thursday. The ballot among the miners' lodges has proved adverse to the masters' recent offer. A strike is considered probable in the Newcastle district. Sailed^- Zealandia, with the San Eraneisco mail. Melboukne, Thursday. *. The ship Iron Duke, about which considerable anxiety was' felt, has arrived from London. The steamer Norfolk, which left Plymouth on the -20th April, goes to Lyttelton and Wellington, and thence to Sydney. There is a considerable amount of mining speculation in Ballarat at the present time. An official telegram announces that Major Strathan, at present Governor of the Windward Islands, West Indies, has been appointed Governor of Tasmania, vice Mr Weld. The spread of diphtheria at Hamilton is diminished and precautions are being, taken vto prevent an outbreak in other parts of the colony.
