The stewards of the Wellington Racing Club contemplate holding a Spring meeting at the end of November, but nothing will be definitely settled until the annual meeting to J)e hejd shortly. A number of men have arrived from the country seekiDg employment. Tfc'is stated that the police made a raid on the hotels yesterday, and have laid informations against five for Sunday traffic. Tuesday. In consequence of the Fire Brigade dis"banding last night, the City Council have decided that the corporation employees Bhould hold themselves in readiness to act as firemen until more permanent arrangements can be made. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 12.42 this afternoon, the direction being W.toS. At the Supreme Court this morning the case of Loskie and others v. McDonald and other*, the original directors of the Wellington Tramway Company, was commenced. The action is set aside, the sale of undertaking of the Company on the ground that the Provisional directors of the Company had become personally interested in undertaking with original promoters. The case is most likely to occupy two or three days. . Oamaru, Tuesday. Two stacks of wheat, belonging to Mr. Foley, at Paketoka. were destroyed by fire on Saturday night between 9 and 10. They are believed to be insured, but the amount is unknown. Foley was in Oamaru afcthe time, and cannot in any. way account for the fire. Julia Paul, who murdered her infant in gaol on Sunday morning, was brought before . the Court this morning and remanded for . medical examination as to her sanity. Napiek, Monday. Steps .are being taken to put up a winter steeplechase, and it is understood that the Boeing and Jockey Clubs will unite to make the meeting a success. Tuesday. Mr K. D. Maney, wbo contested tbe last election for Napier has filed his schedule. Liabilities £22,02 1 , assets £20,420. £ 1 7,400 is secured by mortgage. At a. meeting of > creditors held yesterday, it .-was resolved to frithdraw tbe bankruptcy proceedings, and
granted Maney twelve^months to Jcollect the debts due to him. ; Sensational revival services are being held by the Rev Mr Pym, but are not very successful. Christchurch, Monday. On Saturday 15,895 bags of grain were carried on • the Christchurch section. The number df bags accumulated on Saturday night amounted to 20,092. The Civil Service Commission examined to day Mr Reston. gaoler, of Addington, Mr Marshmau, Commissioner of Waste Lands, and A. Smith/ locomotive engineer. On Saturday the members visited Par n ley brick works, and to day the Addington workshops. Arrived— Graf ton from Wellington ; Maori, s.s., from Port Chalmers. Sailed— Dido, schooner, for Poxton. Timaro", Monday. Several perjury cases against McLeish, arising out of a seizure of sheep some weeks ago, have been abandoned. At tbe Magistrates' Court to-day a woman named Graff, whose husband is up couutry, proceeded against one John Whan Allpress for assault. The case excited much amusement. The prosecuterix alleged that on Thursday last Allpress called at her house for a small accouut, "and as he failed to got his money he forcibly abstracted a kiss. Allpress stoutly denied the alleged endearment, and the case had finally to be adjourned till to-morrow, to enable Mra Graff to produce corroborative evidence. New Plymouth, Monday. A volcanic eruption is taking place at the Sugar Loaves, near the Harbor, works. A sulphurous smell prevails for a considerable distance off, and steam is observed . coming from a fissure in the rock. The fissure from which the steam comes is eighteen inches long by twelve inches deep. Thames, Monday. A young man named Melton, son of Mr Melton, of Parnell, a chemist's assistant, was found dead in Mr Hall's shop. He had been drinking lately, and it is supposed he had taken an overdose of chloral. , James Williams, mapper, projector of the Commercial Gaze'te, has been committed on two charges of obtaining money under false pretences.
