The stamp duties for the quarter yielded £40,303, being largely in excess of the amount estimated. The financial year is expected to close with a deficit of £351,000, thus fully confirming Mr Service's recent estimates. The amount required during the present quarter to cover estimated expendi- i ture exceeds £1,900,000. j At an adjourned meeting of squatters and others held last week it wa. decided to form a company for frozen meat exportation, with, a capital of £100,000. It is not intended to confine the company to the use of Gifford's or Bell's and Colman's processes, but to reserve liberty to adopt whichever promises j to answer best. , It was stated at the meeting that should the Stock Tax in Victoria not be removed, or a rebate be allowed by the Government, the company might transfer its operations elsewhere. The harbor trust has commenced work at Fisherman's Bend, where in a few days 200 men will be employed. Sydney, March 31. The Bii 1 introduced by Sir H. Parkes declaring that the Council has never had power to ( amend Money Bills, was read the first time. The Bill further declares that the Council shall not have power to make such amendments in future. Sir Alfred Stephen submitted to the Council a series of resolutions ottering the power of the Council to amend Money and Taxation Bills, so long as the increase or diminition of taxation was not involved. The resolutions were shelved, the " previous question " being carried. Tbe debate in the Council on the Education Bill proposal to make education entirely free was negatived. The quarter's revenue shows a decrease of no less than £201,603. The Taxation, Land, and Customs has decreased, but the Spirit duties, Railway, and Postal'departments have increased. . The decrease of land revenue exceeds £240,000. At the Randwick Races on Wednesday the weather was beautiful, and the attendance was good including the Governor and suite. Petrea and Martindale were equal favorites. Flying Handicap : Clarenza 1, Chesterfield 2, Star 3. A grand race ; Clarenza won by half a-head, and there was the same distance between Chesterfield and Star. Autumn Stakes : Fanblus 1, Waterloo 2, Good Morning 3. Betting six to four on Waterloo, who made the running at the start, but Fanblus overtook and beat him easily by two lengths. Waterloo ten engths ahead of Good Morning. Gold Cup: Petrea 1, Martindale 2. Strathearn 3. Petrea and Martindale started equal favorites. It was a bad start, Freemason leading. Sunlight ran well, taking the premier position from Cutts' stand, hut Petrea overtook hitn in the straight and went ahead, winning easily by five lengths, Martindale, Sunlight, Black Swan, and Lowlander following.
