The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 1880.

The English mail via San Francisco should arrive at Auckland to morrow. The Taiaroa will bring down the Southern portion of the

mail, ie&tiag onciiUtip on Sund*? morning, ■ : fend arriving hefe" on Monday night. , A meeting :of the Nelson Teachers' Association; will be held at the Bridge-street school at two o'clock to-morrow afternoon. Nklson hops continue to be exported iv large quantities. 45 bales were shipped by the Hawea for the South on Tuesday and the Wanaka took away 21 bales yesterday. The Taiaroa also takes a number of bales for the North to-night. Prices are still firm and growers are inclined to hold. We direct attention to an advertisement which appears elsewhere announcing the arrival in Nelson of Dr Grant and Professor Wallenburg, the celebrated Oculists, Aurists, and Specialists. The following is the number of bull's-eyes, centres, outers, and misses made by the Champion shot in nine matches fired at the recent rifle competition at Nelson :—Bull'seyes, 90 ; centres, 78 ; outers, 11 ; misses, 5. Total number of shots fired, 184. We may mention that the whole of the misses were made at the 600 yards' range in the match North v. South, the wind being very changeable at the time. The above excellent shooting will show what perfection our rising shootists have to reach if they aspire for the position of Champion shot. — Taranaki News. Mr William Jellyman, of Spring Creek had a surprise the other morning on opening his front door, to find a handsome stag quietly browsing in his front paddock. Mr Jellyman and some neighbors gave chase to the rare visitant, but after a long and excited pursuit the animal got away from them, and they had to give up any attempt to follow him as futile. The animal must have come from the north-west. Possibly one of our local sportsmen may get the chance of making a bag one of these days.— Marlborougk Express.
