Ashbxjrton, Saturday. Pierce indignation has been aroused by the conduct of some 60 or 70 of the Southern Volunteers, who, on their way to Chris tchurch on Good Friday, rushed and robbed a woman's shop of all the fruit, biscuits, pipes, matches, cigars, and tobacco they could reach. Some £8 or £10 of goods were stolen. The Volunteers belonged to several companies and were not all Navals, as stated in the papers, not more than a half dozen being Navals.

Wellington, Saturday. Bishop Redwood, who leaves by the San Francisco mail en route for Home was to-day presented with a highly complimentary address .from the Catholics of Wellington. In reply he expressed the hope of a speedy return with a number of additional priests for this diocese.

A public meeting has been called by the Mayor for Wednesday to consider the following resolutions for a scheme to construct the West Coast railway by land settlement. Ist, That the Government survey settlements along the line of railway, as near as possible ten miles apart, settlements to be subdivided into 25 acres more or less according to the soil, &c., the same to be paid for by balance of wages, but on failing that to run ten yeara before final payment is demanded. 2nd, That the land be fixed at £2 per acre. 3rd, That the rate of wages be fixed at 6s, 7a, and 8s per day. 4th, That the Government provide rations at Is 3s per head, each man to decide whether he will accept full rations for each member of his family or not. sth, That in addition to rations each man receive Ids per week. 6th, That any ten or twelve men shall have the option of selecting sections contiguous one to the other.
