After this confirmation of the minutes of the previous meeting, and passing the month'o accounts, the Secretary made the /olio wing. report : — j In accordance with a resolution passed last meeting, Messrs. Carter, Cbaytor, and I visited the Company's ditch, at Lower Moutere, to consider the best means of protecting the side of fcne road, when we agreed that it would be 'advisable to. drive two rows of stakes, *<the inner row to be much shorter than the other, and fasten down manuka between the rows with wire, and in order to take advantage of the low state (of Che water. I have invited tenders for the delivery &f stakes and manuka. In company with Mr Grrooby, the member for Pangatotara, I have made an alteration in the proposed of the /jjfldge on i the west side "of the Moutere where I reported last catering .that u portiou of one of the banks of a itfeek had slippel iu. The contract for
lowering a hill and widening the road at Waiwero is completed, and it should be gravelled as soon as possible, the ; floor of the road through the cutting being very soft and springy. Contract; No. 2, through the .late Mr Heath's property at Pangatotara; ia also com> pleted. Having received a telegram from, the Minister for Public* Work?, authorising the Board to proceed with the work of completing the RiwakaTakaka new track, and Chinking that arrangements could at once be made with Messrs Fell and Afkinson for the land through Messrs. Thomas Brothers' property, I invited tenders for making the track, but it appears necessary for Messrs. Pell and Atkinson to communicate with Messrs Thomas Bros.', before the matter ean be finally settled. I have also invited tenders for another section of the Pangatotara road. Talcgra n from Minister for Public Works read, authorising the Board to expend the vote of £700 on the Riwaka-Takaka new track, and nlao letter coveriug printed agreement to be signed by the Chairman, nod six copies of the form of application and certificate for money. Letter from Chairman Waimea County Council read, advising that £44 4s lOd had been paid to the credit of the Board, being its share of the land fund accrued to the CJunty during the past year, and also asking to be supplied with a copy of the valuation list. : Resolved, That the above: sum be equally apportioned amongst the subdistricts of Moutere, Pangatotara, Ngatimoti, and Riwaka for the purpose ef opening roads to land lately purchased, and also that the Secretary furnish the Council with a copy of the valuation list. The Secretary was instructed to rmke enquiries whether the day man at Ngatimoti bad been employed in removing timber thrown across tbe road by persons falling bush on their own lands, or by fires that have spread from bush clearings, and report to the Board at its next meeting, a complaint having, been made that such was the case. < The Secretary reported that the day man at Riwaka had made application for his pay to be raised to seven saillines per day. , Rasolved, That the Board see no reason to alter a previous resolution, viz., that eix shillings per day be paid for all ordinary work, being still dt opinion that such an amount ia a fair day's pay. . Mr Carter reported that he had as requested made one trip in the new barge for a load of gravel, aud considered that it was well adapted for the work, but to work it to advantage a mast and sail were required ; also it would be necessary to procure a dingy, planks, and barrows. He also recommended that the barge should be well tarred, and he thought if his suggestion were carried out that gravel could be delivered at one shilling and nine pence per cjbic yard, Resolved, That (he Secretary procure the articles enumerated by Mr Carter, and place Mr Charles Brougham in charge of the barge, provided he will undertake to deliver what gravel may be required at one shilling and nine pence per cubic yard. Resolved, That the work of protecting the road at Lower Moutere alongside th.3 Company's ditch be proceeded with as fust as poasible. | Resolved, That in reply to Mr Spicer's application for re covering in an old ditch, the Board declines to comply with his request, taking into consideration that the road/ditch drains his land.
