EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeeting was held yesterday. Present : Messrs Barnicoat, Wastney, Rout, Malcolm, Shepbard, Campbell, Dencker and the Bishop of Nelson. Resolved — That Miss Gascoigne be appointed mistress of Toi Toi Valley Girls' school, the Town Committee having been consulted. Resolved — That Miss Sheppard be appointed mistress of Pakawau school, the Pakawau Committee having been consulted. Resolved— That the Spring Grove Committee be informed that the copy of the correspondence referring to the appointment of the mistress of Brightwater school, for which they apply, cannot be supplied to them until a sufficient reason for the request has been assigned. The request of the inhabitants of Ngakawa for a school would be further considered after the Inspector's return from the West Coast. W. C. Ricketts & Co. having declined to carry out the work of excavating at Haven Road for £25, as agreed upon by them, the next lowest tender, that of W. J. Jennings for £39 4s Bd, was accepted. In reply to an application from the Rev. T. Walsh for permission to retain in St. Patrick's school, Charleston, the books and maps formerly supplied by the Board when St. Patrick's was a subsidised school, it was resolved that the required permission be given by the Board. Resolved — That the Board authorise the Westport Committee to expend a sum not exceeding £10 in improving the outhouses. Resolved— 'That, in reply to an application I

from the Westport Committee for £40 to put in repair tbe building at present occupied as a dwelling house by the master of Westport school, the Board declines expending any more money on propeity that does not belong to it. The Board will consider at its special meeting, March 10th, what sum it will allow the matter in lieu of house. Resolved — That the Secretary acknowledge the receipt of a letter from the Westport Committee, commenting on the Board's appointment of a Secretary. Resolved— That the Lower Takaka Committee be authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £5 in providing school furniture and door to teacher's house. Letters having been received from the Riwaka and Lower Moutere Committees referring to the supervision of the ties' teacher's houae, Mr Dencker was renueated to make arrangements iv both cases for the supervision of the work. Resolved — That letters from the teachers of Westport Boys' school, and from the 88 Valley Committee asking for an increase of i salary be considered, together with other similar applications, on March lOtb. Resolved— That the question of increasing the Committee allowances of the Westport and Charleston School Committees be considered on April Ist, when the scale of Committee allowances for the current half year will be settlod. Resolved — That an addition of four rooms be made to the teacher's house at Ranzau, and that the Hope Committee be requested to call for tenders, tojbe submitted to the Board at the April meeting. The resignation of the Secretaryship by Mr George Hodgson having been laid before the Board, it was resolved, That the Board receives with great regret Mr George Hodgson's resignation. Resolved after discussion — That a Secretary be advertised for at a salary of £250. The Secretary was instructed to advertise in the Colonist and Evening Mail, applications to be received until March 30th. The Secretary was instructed to represent to the Inspector-General, that in the opinion of the Board, teachers residing in 3nd near Westport and Reefton. would suffer a serious injustice if no provision be made in those places for local examinations in March. Resolved — That Mr Edmunds be furnished with a copy of the letter of the Waimea West Committee requesting the Board to , concur in his dismissal. Resolved — That the Reefton Committee be authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £5 to enable them to carry out an existing contract together with a further sum of not more than £25 to defray cost of stove and outhouse at Black's Point. The Secretary was instructed to explain to the Reefion Committee that the Reefton school had not been placed in a worse position as to the issue of books than any of the City of Nelson schools, and that the irregularity in the payment of teachers' salaries at Beef ton was not due in any single instance to negligence on the part of the Board. Resolved — That the further consideration of an application for a school site and schoolroom at Waimangaroa be deferred until the Inspector has again visited that district and has reported on the matter. The householders at Central Buller having failed to elect a School Committee on the day appointed, it was resolved that a meeting of householders for election of a Committee be fixed for April 15, at noon, at the schoolroom Fern Flat. Resolved — That a teacher for the Central Buller school be advertised for at a salary of £100, applications to be received until March 30. Resolved — That the Lower Moutere Committee be authorised to expend a sum not exceeding £5 in grubbing up gorse and manuka round the site of the teacher's house. Resolved — That the Board authorise the Spring Grove Committee to expend a sum not exceeding £16 to defray the cost of a well and pump at Brightwater, but that further particulars are required as to the application for £5 for fencing at Spring Grove. Resolved — In reply to a communication from the Education Department that the Board again undertakes the distribution of the grant to Public Libraries. The Secretary was instructed to request the Rockville Committee to send the Board a detailed estimate of the cost of a well and pump. Resolved— ln reply to an application for a subsidy to two half-time schools at Marahau and Sandy Bay, that subsidies be given to two full-time schools in those localities on the annual conditions as to providing school houses and teacher. Resolved — In reply to a request made by the Town Committee for £50 for teaching drawing, that the Board sees no reason for departing frem its former resolution of November 4, 1879.
