CITY COUNCIL.
The ordiuary fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present : Crs Everett (in the chair), Levien, Trask, Crewdson, Harley, Cross, Hounsell, Little, and Johns. A letter was received from Mr Thomas Shirtliffe asking tbat gravel might be placed * on the road in the uigbborhood of his house, a work that was promised eigbt years ago. Ordered to be done. A letter was received from Mr Pickering asking that some rubbish might be removed from tbe west corner of Bronti-street, also that a hedge overlying the road might be cut. Resolved, that steps be taken to compel Mr Adams to have the hedge cut. A letter waa received from Mr Orsman agreeing to repair the road near hia house for ill 7 Is, JSesolved, that the offer be ftccopiecl,
A petition was received from residents on the Waimea Road praying that tbe footpath be made up from the Hospital to the town boundary. Referred to the Public Works Committee. A letter was received from Mr Acton Adams asking if the Council would lay the gas on as far as his house if he agreed to take it; Referred to the Gas Committee. Another letter was received from Mr J. T. Mttckay relative to the hedge between his and Mr Biggs' property. A letter vvas received from Mr J. Garrard resigning the ofiice of Fire Inspector, and Btating thnt be had also resigned the captaincy of the Port Fire Brigade, A letter Was received from the contractors for thc gas trenches in Washington Valley asking for additional payment on account of their having to do more Work thau th«y contracted tor. The Suveyor i'ecorritnended that £3 6s be awarded to thera which was agreed to, Crs Harley aud Little dissenting. A letter was receivtd from Mrs Gibbs calling the attention of the Council to the nuisance caused by the smoke from Mr Griffin's chimney. — Cr Harley thought people were getting too particular here. He would like to see more smoke from faotory chimnoys. If they interfered in tbis matter, the next thing would be thafc somebody would be complaining of the nuisano. created by the gasworks. — The matter was referred to the Inspector of Nuisances. Mr Wigzell reported that he had examined the signatures to the petition for dividing the town into wards, and had found 21 names there which were not on the roll, and 1 1 with wrong initials, which, however, might have been a Mistake in the copying. — Resolved that the petition be returned to the Government with a copy of the roll. The Inspector of Nuisances reported a serious nuisance arising from the drainage from the Coliegs, of slops and other matter into the ditch in Hampden-street ; also a nuisance of a similar character though not so serious as the other, from the Luuatic Asylum. — The Inspector was instructed to take steps to abate the nuisance. The Works Committee called attention to the dangerous position of the new rifle range, as the firing would be direct upon that portion of the harbor most used for pleasure boating parties. They recommended that no firing be allowed after eight a.m., and that a flag be kept flying at the butts while shooting was going on. — Resolved that a legal opinion be taken as to the responsibility of the Council in the matter. On the recommendation of the Works Commiitee it was resolved to erect a lamp at the corner of Milton and Cambria-streets, Crs Crewdson, Trask, and Levien dissenting. The following tenders were received for clearing gorse, briars, &c. : — No. 1 Contract: Wells and Co, £14 17s 6d (accepted); G. Witney, £15; W.Roberts, £15 12s 6d; E. Davis & Co, £17 7s 6d; Dane and Co, £21 10s ; Ricketts & Co, £29 I.s 6d; Jennings and Co, £30. No. 2 Contract: E. Davis & Co, £13 5s 4d ("accepted); G. Witney, £18; Ricketts & Co, £47 10s. On the tender for supplying horses, carts, and drivers, to work in connection with the prison labor, being opened, it was found that W. Orsman, J. Lock, junior, and G. Wilks had tendered alike, namely, singl* horse and cart, 63 per day; double horse and cart, 12s; drivers, fis each. Ic was resolved by a majority of five to three to place the three names in a hat and allow one of the public who were present to draw. This waa done, and MrXock's name was drawn. . For supplying horses and carts for the Corporation work, W. Orsman and W. Taylor's tenders were the same, namely, 6s per day for single horse and carts, 12s for double, and Gs per day for drivers. The same plan was followed as in the former case, and W. Orsman was declared to be the successful tenderer. Cr Little called attention to the dangerous state of Campbell's mill lead. — On the mof'o i of Cr Cross it was resolved that fourteen days notice he giveu to Mr Campbell, aud if the repairs are not completed by that t time, that the water be cut oif. Cr Crewdson called attention to the sewage collecting on the niudflat from the Waimeastreet sewer. Referred to the Works Com mittee and Surveyor, with instructions to act at once. Extended leave of absence was grant«d to the Alaj'or, who is now in Canterbury. On the motion of Cr Harlej', seconded by Cr Crewdson, it was resalved that immediate action be taken to recover the rates for concreting the footpaths. =
