The shipping trade at Lyttelton is very brisk at present, there being a number of large vessels loading there for London. As a contrast to this over a dozen coasting vessels are laid up at that port, owing to the Blackness of the timber trade. The yacht Secret, which it will be remembered took part in the Interprovincial Regatta held at Nelson three years ago, recently made a trip from Sydney to Melbourne. On the passage she encountered some very heavy weather, and had to be hove to on several different occasions. Nevertheless she behaved admirably, and reached her destination safely. The Bteamer Te Atau brought out from Home four models, which are to be placed in the head offiae of the Union Company, at Danedin. They are the models of the Rotcmahana, Te Anau, a steam tug for Port Chalmers, and a steam launch for the Company's use between Dunedin and Wellington. The two latter are merely in contemplation, as yet no order having been given for their construction. With the object of acce'erating the San Francisco mail service, and providing for probable trade requirements (says the Post), the Pacific Mail Company have applied for and obtained permission from the contracting Governments to send the City of Pekin or City of Tokio from San Francisco to the colonies, for the purpose of being iaspected and substituted, if necessary, as a mail boat under the contract, for either the City ef New York or City of Sydne}-. These vessels are the largest and most magnificent of the steamers of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company's fleet.
