London, February 19. The total reserve in notes and bullion in - the Bank of England is £16,625,000. At the wool sales to-day, 10,300 bales were offered, and there was a firm and active demand. St. Petersburg, February 19. It has beeen ascertained that the mine under the Winter Palace was fired by a battery at the time the Imperial family, attended by the servants, were actually entering the dining saloon, and that a number of the latter were ser'ously injured. The affair has caused a great sensation, and a large number of arrests have been made of persons believed to be implicated in the out- ' rage. INTERCOLONIAL. Sydney, Friday. Saturday. W. Hezlett has been elected member for Paddington in the Legislative Assembly in the place of Sutherland, resigned. Hezlett - favors the Government education scheme. The International Exhibition willbe closed on the 20th April. IBrisbane, Saturday. A man bathing in the Kambree river yesterday was attacked by an alligator, which seized him in the thigh and crushed and clawed bim severely. The alligator finally slipped his hold and escaped. The steamer Menmuir, from Singapore, reports that the comet was seen ia Torres Straits. The nucleus was very red, and quite visible. Adelaide, Friday. Wheat is firm at 4s per bushel ; flour, £10 5s to £11. Melbourne, Friday. Messrs Murray, Smith, and Francis have been returned to Parliament unopposed. All the other seats in the Assembly will be contested.
