In the Legislative Assembly last, night, two motions brought forward by Mr David Buchanan to the effect that the LieutenantGovernor should not be allowed to be a member of the Legislative Council, and objecting to the Governor's use of the prerogative of mercy in the case of the two "Wantabadgery bushrangers, were rejected by a large majority. The vital statistics for the last year, which are published to-day, show that an unprecedented increase in the nopulation of the colony. has taken place. Brisbane, Wednesday. The bushranger who stnek up the National Bank in the Wanego district last]month, has been tried and aentenced to death. , . Melbourne, Thursday. Arrived— Arawata from New Zealand. Mr Black has announced his intention of offering himself as a candidate in opposition to the Hon. James Service, the leader of the Opposition.
