CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary fortnightly meeting was held last night. Present : Crs Everett (in the chair, in the absence of the Mayor), Levien, Trask, Crewdson, Cross, Hounsell, Little, Johns, and Harley. A letter from Mr Watts offering to lay down pipes to carry off the water flowing from Trafalgar-street down Brougham-street, if the Council would provide them, was referred to the Works Committee. A letter waß read from the Lord Mayor of London, requesting the Mayor of Nelson to render all the aid in bis power to promoting the fund for the erection of the Rowland Hill memorial, a work in which 160 Mayors

Cr Harley objected to closing the bridge, as the Surveyor had said it would last twelve months. Mr Lightfoot said that he had stated that it mioht la§t that tMe. , , '", Cr Trask thought it would be cian'g'ero'tf? to run the risk, and that the bridge should be closed. — Cr Little thought the bridge should be repaired, and was sure it would laSt Somft time. — C,r Eterett said that, in the face of the report of the Committee' appoittted to examine the bridge, and of the City Surveyor, and considering the fact that there was a good ford in Collingwood-street, and a good bridge in Bridge-street, it would be very unwise to keep the bridge open. — Cr C.re\Vdson had been ov^f of the inspecting Committee', and thought the bridge might remain open until the wet weather Set in. The question was put to'tho Council, and Crs Everett, Johns, and 'Trask voted for closing the bridge, and C,rs-,Crewdson, Cross, Harley, Hounsell, Little' and Levien for keeping it; open. Leave was granted on the usual conditions - to the Naval Brigade Rifle Range Committee to take sods for the new butts from CollingW. 01-street North. Aletter was received from Mr Cloueton, asking that Nile-streefEast in bis neighborhood might be rilade up; and a lamp erected at trie bridge., Referred to the Works Committee. .- New hackney carriage licenses were granted to four applicants. . . ; The City Surveyor's report recommended the obtaining from England a,new exhauster and large.r meter, the boiler for the same to be madein Nelson, the whole to cost £150. Report adopted. . Cr Harley wanted to know when the asphalting was to be proceeded with. It had been authorised a long time ago, the gravel was already screened, and this was the proper season for it. ; The Surveyor was instructed to see that the tramway crossings . at the fort and Patterson's corner be repaired. Cr Hounsell called attention to the state the breast-work near Mary Ann-street. Cr Harley said, he understood' that. the cause of the damage was the removal of gravel by Crs Everett and Hounsell, Crs Everett and Hounsell stated that they had taken no gravel whatever from the spot ) referred to. They had taken it from lpwer ; down and under the supervision of the ' Harbormaster. i Cr Trask called attention to the disgracei ful state of the road between the Albion and ' Commercial wharves. It wanted gravelling badly. Cr Harley said that one of the publicans had complained to him that there was too much gravel there already, his house being almost inaccessible on account of the boulders in front of it. Referred to the Works Committee. The Council then adjourned.
