The passengers by the British Empire in quarantine amuse themselves by the appointment of constables, and relieve the monotony by rabbit shooting, picnics, and games. Saturday. At five o'clock this morning one of the chimneys of a large wooden building situated near Phillips' Foresters' Arms Hotel in Albert-street caught fire, but was speedily put out by two servant girls by putting on the damper. At 8 o'clock fire was observed breaking out through the corner of the upper storey and the alarm was given, and the Brigade promptly arrived, but before the fire could be extinguished the building was completely gutted. It was used as a kitchen and dining room by the landlords of the hotel and the servant girls slept there. Martin and Watson are the lessees and Sadgerow is the owner. Their insurances are unknown but the landlord had no policy. The building destroyed by fire this morning was insured in the National for £200. The New Zealand Accident Insurance Company has commenced business, and shares are at a premium. The Board of Directors accepted 150 proposals for large sums at the last meeting. The single people were landed from quarantine to-day and the married will be on . Monday or Tuesday. Mr Sheehan has gone to visit Rewi. Oamaru, Saturday.
