The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1880.
A meeting of those interested in the proposed races on the Queen's Birthday was held last night, when it was resolved that subscription lists be circulated at once, and canvassers be appointed, and that a programme of seven events,. for. which the total amount of added money will be £100, should be drawn up at once. The prospectus of the Company for the purchase of the Anchor line of steamers is now in the printers' hands and will, we Understand, be published tc-morrow. ~ i A strange oceanic disturbance has been taking place since Wednesday night, wben shortly after twelve o'clock there came up suddenly a tremendous roar as of the sea breaking on the Boulder Bank, and yesterday morning although it was perfectly calm here, there not being a breath of air stirring, there was a heavier sea in the Bay tban has been known for many years past. The same state of things was noticed at Taranaki. By this morning the heavy sea had reached Westport, where it was breaking heavily on the bar, but, strange to sayjit had not got so far south as Greymouth. With all this disturbance here, the steamers which arrived from Wellington this morning report the sea as smooth as glass in the Straits. i
