The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1880.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday Joseph Davis was, on the testimony of Drs Marks and Collins, committed to the Lunatic Aslum. A brilliant meteor darted across the northern sky about 1230 last night, appearing and disappearing with almost the suddenness and swiftness of a flash of lightning, bufc leaving behind a train of light which remained visible for several seconds. The San Francisco mail will arrive by the Taiaroa this evening, and will be sorted by obout 9 o'clock, after which the Post Office will be open for an hour for the delivery of letters. We understand that Mr Oswald Curtis offered, and has accepted, a seat on the Royal Commission appointed to make a full and complete investigation into the cost and economical value of the several public works commenced and proposed in the colony. Than Mr Curtis, a better man for the office could not be found, and the Government are to be complimented upon the selection they have made. Three tenders have been sent in for cateriug for the Volunteers at the forthcoming meeting of the Rifle Association, but to whom the contract is to be given is nofc yet decided. A very pleasant concert was given in the Port Hall last night, the promoters of which are to be congratulated on the success which attended their efforts to provide a popular entertainment afc a moderate rate. Mr Pownall's class acquitted themselves most creditably, and several amateurs rendered valuable assistance, the result being a general desire that ere long something more will be heard of the Port singing class. The Volunteer Reception Committee held a meeting m the Council Chamber last night, but the attendance was very small. Those of the collectors who were present reported subscriptious to the amount of £63, but several were absent. Ifc is generally admitted that directly and indirectly ifc is a considerable advantage to Nelson that it be a centre at which visitors from all parts of the colony meet once a year, and as it rests entirely with the members of the Association to say where the annual meetings are to be held, the inhabitants of the district; will be consulting their own interests in making this place a popular and favorite resort among the Volunteers of the colony. We hope to see a better attendance afc the next Committee meeting.
